The Edmonton Oilers couldn't get anything going last night against the Toronto Maple Leafs in their Hockey Night in Canada Matchup. While the two clubs only play twice a year, there is seemingly a respect between their top scorers Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid, as two of the NHL's best players went head-to-head last night.
The Leafs dominated nearly the entire game, and that frustrated some of the Oilers players. Namely, Leon Draisaitl and Evander Kane, who were caught on camera in what looked like a verbal altercation on the bench. Take a look.
That is the nature of trying to be the best there is. With competitive differences comes some disagreement, and when the stakes are this high, there is bound to be some tempers flaring. Evander Kane wasn't his best last night, and neither was Leon Draisaitl, even though they were both able to record a point each.
Unfortunately, the game didn't go as well as homecoming Zach Hyman had hoped, either. The forward had an opportunity to record 50 goals, and while he was able to pot one, he couldn't get it done for the win in his return to Toronto.
However, the test of a good team is to see how they can respond to a moment like this. While they could not get it done last night against the Leafs, the Oilers will have an opportunity to bounce back today against the Ottawa Senators. This, if things go to plan, should be a way for the team to bounce back against a struggling Senators group.
