Danny Briere explains why he made a controversial trade with the Calgary Flames
Philadelphia Flyers general manager Danny Briere revealed why he traded Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee today.
Yesterday, the Philadelphia Flyers completed a trade with the Calgary Flames, sending Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to Calgary in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier.
The move came as a surprise to some as both Farabee and Frost are young players that fit the Flyers timeline for their rebuild.
However, it seems as though GM Danny Briere simply did not see the two forwards as part of the team's long-term plans.
He stressed cap flexibility as a big reason for the move, noting that the Flames were willing to take on all of Farabee's contract.
"The biggest thing in all of this is the cap flexibility that it gives us moving forward. Maybe not this year per se but moving forward, Briere explained. It's no secret that, especially in Joel's case, the cap hit moving forward was tough. Most of the discussions we had, teams were not willing to take on his full salary, especially with the term left on it."
Farabee, 24, has three seasons left on his contract after the 2024-25 campaign.
He comes with a 5 million dollar cap hit for those years. For a forward who has scored around half a point per game to this point in his career, that is a hefty price to pay.
Notably, the Flames took on all of that cap hit in the trade, so the Flyers did not have to retain on him at all.
He has 8 goals and 19 points in 50 games with the Flyers this season and is yet to make his debut with Calgary.
Frost on the other hand, only has a cap hit of 2.1 million dollars and is a restricted free agent this summer.
However, as Briere points out, he is in line for a raise as the 25-year-old has 25 points including 11 goals through 49 games this year.
The Flyers GM also added that the organization has prospects coming through the system that they expect will be able to replace Frost and Farabee in the lineup at a better price in the coming years.
"Morgan was also getting closer to getting paid a lot more money, Briere added. Again, it goes back to the players and the development of the players around them. We are a little different than we've ever been, I think, within the Flyers organization where there are a lot more prospects coming in."
The Flyers have already seen prospects make a big impact on the team as Matvei Michkov is second on the team in scoring. Perhaps in the coming years, he will be joined by more impactful young guns.
