The Seattle Kraken had named Jordan Eberle captain, just ahead of the puck dropping in their season opener against the St. Louis Blues. This is a momentous decision moving forward for a team into the next chapter of what still is a young franchise.
The 34-year-old Eberle is only the second player to wear the "C" for the Kraken. Mark Giordano, the team's first captain held the title during the 2021-22 season before being traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Since that time, the Kraken have played without a captain but now every NHL team has a leader going into this season.
Eberle's time with the Kraken began in 2021 when he was selected in their expansion draft from the New York Islanders. The Regina, Saskatchewan native has left his mark on the team's history, sitting second in games played, goals, assists, and points. He is also one of just two Kraken players to record a hat trick, alongside Jared McCann.
One of Eberle's high points came in the 2023 playoffs when he scored the overtime winner in Game 4 against Colorado. That helped Seattle claim their first playoff series win, setting a milestone in the early history of the team.
Head coach Dan Bylsma informed the team on Monday, and now it's a formality: the Kraken are ready to charge into the new season with Jordan Eberle at the helm.
