With just a few days left in the NHL season, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe addressed the media. During his press conference, he revealed that Auston Matthews' pursuit of 70 goals has been a major distraction.

Over the last month or so Auston Matthews has captivated the NHL with his success and chase for 70 goals in a season. He currently sits at 69 on the verge of an incredible feat.

AUSTON MATTHEWS HAS 69 GOALS!

Today Sheldon Keefe was asked about how this situation has impacted his team. In his answer Sheldon Keefe was brutally honest and ruined some of the fun behind the chase.

Yeah, I mean, obviously, that's a major distraction. It doesn't help us, what we're trying to accomplish on the ice. But it's exciting. I get it. And it's-- especially when he gets to 69, you can see it. It's really-- it's growing, anticipating. And now you're feeding it. I'm feeding it. I want it to happen. But I wanted it for the fans. But I'm glad the game's over. Let's move on."

It sounds as though while Sheldon Keefe is proud of Auston Matthews and wants him to accomplish it he is more annoyed than excited. With just 2 games left for the Maple Leafs Auston Matthews will need to find the back of the net to make the distraction worth it.

Once the Maple Leafs start the playoffs the distractions and media hype will only build. One has to wonder if this frenzy will help the team deal with the chaos that is to come in the playoffs.
