The NHL ignored Connor McDavid's recent actions, but after a cross-check against the Vancouver Canucks, it appears a suspension could be on the way after things got heated during this very brutal rivalry between two of Canada's top teams.

Connor McDavid escaped any punishment from the NHL recently after an elbow to the head of Minnesota's Marcus Johansson caused him to head to Injured Reserve, but this time, he might not be so lucky.

During the Edmonton Oilers clash with the Vancouver Canucks, McDavid got into it with Canucks forward Conor Garland, ultimately resulting in both of them in the penalty box after some back and forth.

However, it was McDavid who may cop the worst of it, as he blatantly cross-checked Garland to the face, with top NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman revealing that it would result in an automatic hearing.

The play in question was a brutal one, as there was no reason for McDavid to go after the face of his opponent, and as we've seen before, the NHL is ready to come down hard on plays like this.

While it's become clear that the NHL's Department of Player Safety isn't exactly known for their consistency, it would be a woeful mistake if they were to let him off with nothing this time, and given that this is his second offense in the past week, it's safe to say that eyes will be closely on them this time.

Ultimately, it's an incredibly unnecessary play to make for McDavid, and it could have resulted in serious injury for Garland, so while he escaped punishment once, don't expect the NHL to be lenient on the face of the league for the second time this week.
