The Canucks have reportedly been trying to trade JT Miller for some time now as tensions continue to rise in the team's locker room.
Now it appears as though a deal may actually be close to being finalized.
NHL insider Rick Dhaliwal reported earlier today that the team is working hard to complete a deal centered around Miller, but they have not yet asked him to waive his on-move clause.
This is not the only sign that points to a potential deal happening as soon as today.
One team that has consistently been in on Miller is the New York Rangers which is not particularly surprising given the state of that organization.
Notably, the team made several of their best forward prospects healthy scratches tonight all at the same time.
This is almost certainly not related to the level of their play, but it could be as insurance to make sure that they do not get injured moments before a trade is completed.
With all of that being said, trading a player like Miller is still going to be very difficult.
Miller still has five years left on his contract after this one and comes with an 8 million dollar cap hit.
We just do not see contracts like this traded in the NHL very often.
As a result, the Canucks are reportedly looking around the league for a third team to get involved to help with salary retention.
It may cost the Canucks quite a lot for another team to retain money for five years depending on how much of Miller's cap hit they need to get rid of.
As such, the return for Miller may not be as high as expected, but hopefully, just him leaving the team will help them turn their season around.
