The past six months or so have been very tumultuous for the former Rangers captain.
Over the summer, he was heavily involved in trade rumors as the team attempted to clear cap space to make other moves.
Finally, those rumors were put to rest when the team finally moved him last week, trading Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks.
Unfortunately for him though, the rumor mill remains in full swing.
While he is no longer part of the Rangers, new trade rumors have immediately cropped up with many believing that the Ducks will attempt to flip him at the trade deadline this year.
One team that is reportedly interested in him is the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to Toronto Sun reporter Steve Simmons, the Leafs are willing to pursue him at the deadline this season is the Ducks are willing to retain some of his salary.
Such a move would be quite awkward and potentially impossible though.
This is because Trouba recently revealed that he does not want to play for any Canadian team period.
Furthermore, Trouba still has his modified no-trade list. He has a 12-team no-trade list meaning he could easily have every Canadian team including Toronto on it.
We already know the Columbus Blue Jackets are one of those 12 teams as Trouba rejected a trade there just hours before he was moved to Anaheim.
As such, it seems like the Leafs would be fighting a steep uphill battle to get Trouba on their club.
In addition to these difficulties, his cap hit remains a significant hurdle and his play has plummeted to the point where even at 50 or 75% retained, he might only be a net neutral asset at best.
With that being said, it will certainly be interesting to see how Brad Treliving handles this situation and what other defensemen he may target in trades this upcoming spring.
