With little warning, the Carolina Hurricanes shockingly landed Mikko Rantanen in a trade last month, with GM Eric Tulsky moving Martin Necas and Jack Drury to Colorado to make the deal happen.
In six games with the team thus far, the former Avalanche star has tallied just 1 goal and 1 assist, and with the team looking for superstar level production, it's had many questioning whether this was the right move.
Reportedly, the 'Canes made this deal with the hope that they could extend Rantanen before free agency in the summer, but as of yet we've heard little on that front, and now, it could force them to re-evaluate the situation.
According to top NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, everyone in the league has their eyes on the situation, as the 'Canes may shockingly be open to trading him again, but without a new deal in place, it's unclear just what the interest level around the league would be.
This doesn't mean that a trade is imminent, as the Hurricanes still have seven wins in their last 11 games, and with Rantanen now paired up with his Finnish teammate Sebastian Aho, he could be convinced to return to the team in free agency this summer.
Ultimately though, Tulsky now has a major decision to make, as he risks losing a major trade acquisition in free agency similar to Jake Guentzel of a year ago, but if they move Rantanen and he stars on his new team, it could raise major questions, so keep a very close eye on this situation moving forward.
