From the moment the 2024/25 campaign began, it was clear that the Colorado Avalanche had issues in net, and despite many changes, they've been unable to turn things around thus far.
The team have added Scott Wedgewood in recent times, but it hasn't helped, as the team currently rank 29th in the NHL with 3.55 goals allowed per game, and given the forward group, this team could contend with solid goaltending.
Now, they've made a major move to help that cause, as Elliotte Friedman has announced the team have acquired 28-year old Mackenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks.
In 19 starts thus far in 2024/25, Blackwood is playing at a career best level despite the below average defensive unit in front of him, posting a .910 save percentage and a 2.65 GAA, both of which would be career best numbers after landing in San Jose a season ago.
With a cap hit of just $2.35 million in 2024/25 and pending free agency, this is a solid, cheap move for the Avalanche to make, as Blackwood could finally be the answer to their woes in net.
On top of Blackwood, winger Givani Smith and a fifth-round pick will be going to Colorado in what could be a move that shakes up the entire NHL as the Avalanche look to have found their answer.
In return for Blackwood, the Sharks will receive Alexandar Georgiev, Nikolai Kovalenko and a second-round draft pick, showing that the Avalanche are ready to go all in on Blackwood as their No. 1.
This also opens up the No. 1 spot in San Jose for top prospect Yaroslav Askarov, so while not many trades in the NHL are win-win, it's hard to deny that this one is exactly that.
