Alex Ovechkin gets punished by the Russian government for unpaid debts
Alex Ovechkin is among the highest-paid players in the NHL but has unpaid debts to the Russian government that he was punished for by having his accounts frozen.
Today it was announced that Alex Ovechkin had his bank accounts frozen by the Russian government due to unpaid debts.
"Championat reports that Alex Ovechkin's professional bank account has been frozen due to a 543 US dollar debt in federal taxes.
It's not a good time to owe money to the government over there, I suppose." - Andrew Zadarnowski
It was later reported that Ovechkin was not responsible for the relatively small debt.
UPDATE
Here's what a source close to Ovi told Match TV
"Ovechkin himself does not owe anything, this is a technical error. The individual entrepreneur does not conduct commercial activities; it only has patents for Alexander's trademarks. Our accountant is looking into this now"
Ovechkin made $12.5 million last year and averages $9.5 million per year on his current contract. With such a large number, it is highly unlikely that Ovechkin will wind up worrying about the debt but it is surely an inconvenience.
