3rd overall pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi hits an all time low in Carolina
The third overall pick in 2018 Jesperi Kotkaniemi has apparently hit an all time low with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes were just eliminated from the playoffs by the New York Rangers after a tight series between two of the best teams in the NHL.
One of the worst players for the Canes in the series was Jesperi Kotkaniemi. In 11 games, he only scored one assist, with a -2 goal differential:
Three seasons after accepting an offer sheet from the Canes, it's safe to say that Kotkaniemi's performances have been underwhelming.
Now, it looks like he has hit rock bottom.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the organization will buy out his conract:
"EF thinks #CauseChaos will buyout Kotkaniemi"
The Finnish forward has six seasons remaining on his $4,820,000 AAV contract, with a no-movement clause kicking in after the next season.
Buying him out would have important repercussions on the team's salary cap, which wouldn't be ideal. However, they would get rid of one of their worst players.
It would also potentially mean the end of Kotkaniemi's career in North America. After all his struggles and his reputation, we can't imagine how any NHL team could be interested in signing him, even at the NHL's minimum salary.
Do you think the Carolina Hurricanes will buy out Jesperi Kotkaniemi's contract this summer?
