Ethan Bear has spoken up about his experience in the NHL Player Assistance Program and how it helped him escape a dark time in his life.

In an interview with Sammi Silber of The Hockey News, former Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and Carolina Hurricanes defender Ethan Bear was very open about his experience while in the NHL Player Assistance Program.

"The thing is, I didn't even know. I didn't know about it until I went, and I think it's crazy to me that I had no idea and I was probably dealing with it for years without any idea at all. I guess it could not necessarily be a scary thing, but a hard thing to see in yourself," Bear said.

The defenseman had entered the Player Assistance Program after struggling to come back after a shoulder injury. Spending time as a healthy scratch and playing inconsistently, Bear found himself struggling with day-to-day activities and realized he needed help.

"You know what? I had to go," he said honestly. "It was just... it was the best thing for me. That's all I could say."

Now out of the Player Assistance Program, Bear is trying to stick within the Capitals defensive core as a regular going into the next season. In 275 career NHL games, Bear has 17 goals and 50 assists for 67 points.
