I can't believe this stuff is still happening in 2022, but sadly it is. The American Hockey League has announced that Rochester Americans Center Ben Holmstrom has been Suspended following the incident that happened during the game on March 30th 2022.
Ben Holmstorm is 34 and has played his career mainly in the minor leagues with only 5 games with the Philadelphia Flyers on tryout contract.
The American Hockey League released this Statement following their decision,
"AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE ANNOUNCES SUSPENSION
SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts The American Hockey League today announced that Rochester Americans forward Ben Holmstrom has been suspended for eight (8) games as a consequence of his actions during a game vs. Utica on March 30th.
Holmstrom was assessed a game misconduct at 20:00 of the first period after using homophobic language.
As part of the suspension, Holmstrom will be participating in diversity and inclusion education. The American Hockey League is committed to building a culture that is safe, inclusive, and free from abuse, harassment and all forms of unethical behavior or misconduct.
Holmstrom has already served two games of the suspension."
This comes 6 months after ECHL Player Jacob Panetta was suspended for what the deemed a racist gesture towards Jordan Subban. Panetta was recently reinstated.
