The Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets are at the opposite ends of the Central Division, and now, they've brokered a surprising trade that has come out of absolutely nowhere.
On Wednesday, it was announced that Winnipeg is sending former third-round pick Dmitry Kuzmin to the Blackhawks in exchange for talented blue-line prospect Isaak Phillips.
In Phillips, the Jets will be getting a 23-year-old with some NHL experience, and given the criticism of their blue-line depth, this could be them giving a chance to the former fifth-round draft pick.
In 56 NHL games thus far, the 6-foot-3 Ontario native has tallied 2 goals and 12 points, and while he's not expected to walk into an NHL role, there's a chance he gets some game time on the third pairing moving forward.
In exchange, they'll send Chicago a 21-year-old defensive prospect in Dmitry Kuzmin, who excelled in his two seasons in the OHL with the Flint Firebirds, and although he hasn't made much of an impact since turning professional, he's certainly managed to maintain the potential that he came into the league with.
In 21 games with the AHL's Manitoba Moose this season, Kuzmin has just 1 goal and 4 points alongside a -9 differential, but with the Blackhawks continuing to look toward the future, he's got a much better chance of cracking the team there.
Ultimately, this is a trade that came out of absolutely nowhere for both teams, but it could benefit them both moving forward as both players are now in much better positions to succeed, it's just up to their new franchises to help them get to that next level.
