Mikko Rantanen seeks Connor McDavid money and shockingly turns down contract offer
Mikko Rantanen is eyeing the same type of money as Connor McDavid and has just turned down a contract offer that was presented to him by the Hurricanes.
The Carolina Hurricanes made the biggest splash of the 2024-25 campaign when they traded for Mikko Rantanen of the Colorado Avalanche with the hopes of adding a bonafide superstar to their roster.
However, securing Rantanen long-term is the question. Having his deal expire at the end of the year, there's been no indication as to whether he's going to dip his toes in free agency. But last night, perhaps the biggest hint was provided to hockey fans.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman cites the Hurricanes as having offered Rantanen a massive proposal at the Four Nations Face-Off event.
More than $100 million was turned down by Rantanen
It was more than $100 million with him earning more than $12.5 million annually, averaged per year, for eight seasons. Rantanen's agent would not take the bite even with this massive proposal, as his client looks to secure Connor McDavid money.
"During the Four Nations break the Hurricanes met with his representatives face to face," said Friedman during Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday night. "The Hurricanes made an offer."
"I believe that offer is into the 9 digits," revealed Friedman. "So it's a big, big, offer."
"Rantanen at this point in time has said, not yes and not no, he's just said 'I still need to process everything' so at this point in time there's no answer from Rantanen."
"Rantanen is potentially the biggest name headed into the trade deadline," admitted Friedman.
With the March 7th deadline approaching, Carolina is at a crossroads. If Rantanen remains unsigned, there is a good chance he will be traded again this year. Stay tuned as things continue to happen.
