All of a sudden, the New Jersey Devils' goaltending situation got even more complicated.

Hip Surgery

In an interview with the Daily Sentinel , Dan MacKinnon, Assistant GM with the Devils and GM of the AHL's Utica Comets, said Nico Daws underwent hip labrum surgery when the regular season ended, and will be sidelined for some time.

"It means the 22-year-old Devils prospect and the Comets' No. 1 goalie last season for much of the 2022-23 season will likely miss the first part of the upcoming 2023-24 season." - Daily Sentinel

The standard timeline for this type of surgery is around six month. Other NHL goaltenders have undergone similar procedures in the past.

Playing Through

MacKinnon said Daws suffered the injury during the season. He did take some time to rest it, but insisted on playing through it, even into the post season where he played all 6 games for the Comets. Daws has won World Junior Championship gold with Canada, and the OHL Championship with the Guelph Storm.

There is speculation that netminder MacKenzie Blackwood is on his way out of New Jersey, and that his exit may include not being extended a qualifying offer. No doubt the Devils were hoping to have Daws at training camp and preseason to see what he could do for the team. There are few other options from within the organization.
