In a chase for Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 goals, Ovechkin scored his 50th of the season last night, which was his 780th of his career, just 114 short of the record.
One thing you can say about Ovechkin over his career is that he is consistent. At the age of 36, he is still scoring at the same rate as he did when he was in his 20's. The fact that he is 36 years old is what makes this goal tonight so special.
Ovechkin has now become the leader is most goals scored in a season by someone aged 36 or older. This record was previously held by Teemu Selanne when he scored 48 goals in 2006-07.
Ovechkin also tied an NHL record with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky, scoring his 9th 50th goal season in his career.
