Today the Boston Bruins made an announcement that was a long time coming. An announcement that probably should have been made years ago, but better late than never.
It's been a long time coming.
On January 18, 2022 64 years to the day of his historic NHL debut the #NHLBruins will officially retire Willie O'Ree's No. 22 at @tdgarden before a game against the Carolina Hurricanes.
Willie O'Ree officially broke the NHL's colour barrier on January 18th, 1958 in a game against the Montreal Canadiens. Now, 86, O'Ree was given the title of NHL Diversity Ambassador back in 1998. Since he has traveled to schools, community hockey programs and other events to help grow the game as an ambassador of inclusion.
In 2018 O'Ree was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder's category. An honour given for coaching, managerial or executive ability, or ability in another significant off-ice role, sportsmanship, character and contributions to his or her organization or organizations and to the game of hockey in general.
This is an amazing honour and I look forward to seeing O'Ree become the 12th person to have his sweater honoured by the Bruins.
