The Edmonton Oilers were hoping to build off their Western Conference Finals appearance last year. Unfortunately after 35 games the Oilers sit outside the playoff picture and have more questions than answers.

The Oilers have been connected heavily to the Anaheim Ducks and it appears we now know why. According to The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta reports that Oiler's GM Ken Holland is working the phones currently to help with Edmonton's defensive deficiencies.

"Oilers GM Ken Holland wants to bolster his blueline, but is also looking for a second-line winger and a bottom-six forward to add to his roster.

The Oilers have expressed legitimate interest in Montreal Canadiens defenceman Joel Edmundson, as multiple outlets have reported, as well as Arizona Coyotes star Jakob Chychrun and both Kevin Shattenkirk and John Klingberg of the Anaheim Ducks.

If the Oilers are looking to fix their defense in one move a deal for Klingberg and Shattenkirk makes a lot of sense. The only problem is neither player will help the Oilers keep the puck out of their net as much as they'll help them score goals.

It does appear the clock is ticking for the Oilers and for Ken Holland. Missing the playoffs this season is NOT an option.
