They had 2 strong needs to address this offseason and they completed them both. They needed to re-sign Evander Kane who fit in very well with the Oilers.
Which they did, getting him signed to a 4 year contract with an AAV of $5,125,000. The other need was to find new goaltending, which they also did by signing Jack Campbell to a 5 year deal with an AAV of $5,000,000.
Something the Oilers have missed for years though is depth in the forward ranks. They have always relied too heavily on their top 6 to provide all the scoring and ultimately is why they never make it far in the playoffs. Well, a former top 10 draft pick, ironically by the Oilers, teases a return to Edmonton.
Why is Gags posting a picture on his IG with an Oilers shirt??? pic.twitter.com/QqDxI1ozQC Tes B (@tg_bennett) August 14, 2022
Sam Gagner was drafted 6th overall by the Oilers back in 2007 and was a consistent 40+ point scorer for the Oilers during his first stint. He returned for a brief time between 2018-2020 before heading off to Detroit for a few years.
On Sunday Gagner posted this instagram story that had a shirt with the Edmonton Oilers logo which got fans excited as he was definitely a fan favourite in Edmonton. Gagner never panned out to the potential he showed in junior where he scored 118 points in 53 games for the London Knights, but he will provide some valuable depth for the Oilers come playoff time.
