After what everyone thought was going to be a very deep playoff run, ended in a 5 game series against the Edmonton Oilers. The Flames have quite a few moving parts before free agency on the 13th of July and one of the biggest situations revolves around superstar Johnny Gaudreau who just put up his first 100 point season in his career. Lucky for him it was a contract year and he is looking to get a significant pay raise from it as well.
Unfortunately for the Calgary Flames though, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, Gaudreau has shut down all negotiations between his agent and the Calgary Flames. The Flames have a contract offer on the table for Gaudreau but he has not responded to anything from the Flames.
It seems a little weird that he would be ignoring the team that drafted him and he spent his whole career until this point, but obviously Gaudreau wants to hit the open market and get a huge pay day. The least he could do though is respond to the negotiations.
We are now just 11 days away until Free Agency, and it seems more and more likely that Gaudreau will be testing the open waters and leaving Calgary. One major thing for 28 year old Gaudreau is if he is really just interested in a larger pay day, it will come at a lesser term in free agency as the Flames are the only team that can offer him that 8th year, unless they trade his rights before the 13th.
It will be interesting to see what happens, it's not too often you see a 100 point scorer get to free agency.
