According to David Pagnotta, Dallas Stars defenseman John Klingberg has approached the team and requested a trade.

This is a big development in the Klingberg saga as during the off season the Stars are reported to have told teams they weren't looking to move the dman. According to Pagnotta though contract extension talks have gone absolutely nowhere.

Earlier this year a rumour circulated that Klingberg was seeking an 8 year 64 million dollar contract extension.

Klingberg is a 29 year old right handed defenseman so he clearly will be valued very highly by many teams seeking that sort of player. But what is likely to make Klingberg even more valuable is his cap hit of only $4,250,000 which could be the easily absorbed by most teams near the trade deadline.

There also remains a scenario where the Stars choose to keep Klingberg despite his trade request due to them being in the playoff race. The Stars are currently only 4 points back of the Oilers for a wild card spot with 4 games in hand.

Klingberg has 16 points in 25 games including 7 points on the powerplay. It's clear Klingberg is looking to get himself into a situation he can cash out on his next and likely final big money contract.
