The NHL has been criticized recently about having far stricter COVID policies than some of the other professional leagues. These testing policies even went as far as to make the NHL the laughing stock of pro sports, being the only professional sport to put their season on pause.

The CDC made changes to recommended quarantine periods and advising that it should be reduced from 10 days to 5 days. Immediately both the NFL and NBA implemented these changes with the NHL dragging their feet. Well according to Elliotte Friedman today the NHL and NHLPA both agreed to these approved changes, but of course there is a catch:

Per new CDC guidelines, NHL/NHLPA have agreed to possibility of vaccinated individuals leaving isolation five days after a positive COVID test if they have no symptoms or «symptoms are resolving.» Key phrase: «providing such exit is permitted by your local health authority.

Negative tests and clearance from club physicians also mandatory to exit isolation after 5 days. We were headed down this road after NFL/NBA agreed to it, but now we will see how different teams are affected.

Teams/players seem very happy with this news and we will see how local authorities react. Of course, most eyes in Canada/Northern California which have tougher restrictions. We will see where things go."

According to these updated terms and policies there will be a competitive advantage to certain teams based off of location as teams in California and Canada will still have to abide by local health measures.
