At the beginning of the season, Detroit Red Wings player Jakub Vrana entered the NHLPA's Player Assistance Program due to substance abuse.
After completing the program, Vrana was sent to the American Hockey League, where he remained for a few weeks.
He got called up for a few games, but there was tension between Vrana and the team, which ended up seeing him traded at the deadline. He ended up getting traded to the St. Louis Blues for Dylan McLaughlin and round 7 pick in the 2025 draft, and the Red Wings retained 50% of his salary.
Vrana is thriving in St. Louis and has now scored 5 goals and 6 points in 9 games for the Blues. Enjoying his time in St. Louis, Vrana is no longer holding back his comments regarding how he was treated in Detroit.
Vrana has stated that he did not feel he was given a fair chance by the team, especially after returning from the NHLPA's program.
I came back and felt like a new person. It was totally different. It's just that it was a little frustrating to me. expected a little bit more trust and a little bit more chance to kind of put the pieces together again. That didn't work.
I still think I did the right thing (in seeking help). Some people didn't like that and they didn't accept it .. Now it's a new opportunity. I cannot be happier to join.
