This week it was announced that Andrei Vasilevskiy suffered a major back injury.
With his injury, the Tampa Bay goaltending job is now left up to Jonas Johansson. Many fans and media have wondered if the Lightning will make a move for a more veteran option. This has led to one common name being thrown around as a potential replacement for Andrei Vasilevskiy going forward.
A new rumor has come from NHL Trade Rumor.com that has linked a future hall-of-fame goaltender to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The rumor suggests that Marc-Andre Fleury is on the Lightning's shortlist to acquire. Lightning general manager Julien BriesBois is reportedly very interested in the idea of getting Fleury.
Unfortunately for the Lightning, it won't be all up to them. Fleury currently has a no-trade clause and could refuse to go to Tampa if he wishes. Fleury still clearly has a lot left in the tank. In preseason action the other day he made a fantastic save on top NHL draft pick Connor Bedard.
If the interest is mutual and the Lightning can find a trade package that keeps their core group intact they have to make it. Fleury would give them a fantastic stopgap to take the pressure off of Vasilevskiy returning.
