Shane Wright had a fairly successful training camp this year, opening some eyes with his productive preseason games. However, the Kraken have just announced that they will be releasing the 19-year-old.
Wright was the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NHL entry draft by the Kraken. He played 8 games with the Kraken last year before being sent back to his junior club. In the 8 games, he scored 1 goal and 1 assist.
Wright, being only 19 years old, should be relegated back to his junior club to finish out his junior career after not making the Kraken roster. However, in somewhat controversial news, the NHL announced that they would be giving the Kraken and Wright an exemption which allows him to play for Coachella Valley in the AHL instead of in the CHL.
The exemption was granted as Wright played 1 game less than the required 25 last year, which would have gotten him his 4 required years. He is also just 5 days shy of the age cut-off that would have allowed him to play in the AHL.
