For the first time in three years, the Tampa Bay Lightning will not be hoisting the stanley cup. Last night the Colorado Avalanche were the victors and beat the Lightning in 6 games to be the 2022 Stanley Cup Champions.
Even though the season is now officially over, the National Hockey Leagues Player Safety department might not be. During the 2nd period of last nights game, Ryan McDonagh landed a hit from behind which the referee's immediately blew the whistle and called the penalty.
After they blew the whistle, Stamkos loses his cool. Stamkos had the puck when the referee blew the whistle and he turned and fired the puck right at official Gord Dwyer.
The Lightning captain was quick to apologize for the referee, but if this were a regular season game, that would have been an automatic penalty. There have been a large amount of dangerous calls that were not called in these playoffs and it's been frustrating for the players.
Under these rules, Stamkos could be looking at a suspension:
40.4 Automatic Suspension Category III Any player who, by his actions, physically demeans an official or physically threatens an official by (but not limited to) throwing a stick or any other piece of equipment or object at or in the general direction of an official, shooting the puck at or in the general direction of an official, spitting at or in the general direction of an official, or who deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall be suspended for not less than three (3) games.
