With the 4 Nations Face Off break over, hockey fans were preparing to get back to normal NHL programming. Last night, the Anaheim Ducks faced the Detroit Red Wings, a matchup that didn't look very interesting after the best-on-best action displayed in the 4 Nations.
However, fans got to see an action-packed game, notably marked by a controversial hit by Ducks forward Trevor Zegras.
Indeed, he took Michael Rasmussen, the Red Wings' 9th overall pick in 2017, out of the game with a dirty hit to the head.
With only a few minutes left in the second period, Zegras played with intensity to help his team get back in the game from a 4-2 deficit.
Rasmussen got rid of the puck in the neutral zone in an attempt to make an offensive push, and shortly after making a pass, he was sent to the floor by Zegras, who came in at full speed.
Zegras hit Rasmussen headfirst with his shoulder, sparking quite the controversy among hockey fans.
The worst was yet to come. Rasmussen left the game, and Zegras didn't even get a penalty on the play.
Check out how it happened in the video below:
There's a case to be made that Zegras should've gotten a match penalty on the play, especially considering that in another game between the Dallas Stars and the New York Islanders, Casey Cizikas was ejected from the game for a hit that seemed less reckless in comparison:
An official confirmation from the NHL's Department of Player Safety is expected later today.
UPDATE:
Frank Seravalli announced that the NHL is expected to release an official verdict on the hit soon:
As for Zegras, he might also be waiting for updates on a possible trade: he has been involved in plenty of trade rumors in the last year, and with the deadline coming up, it could happen in the next few days.
Stay tuned for further details.
