After blowing the Bolts out 5-0 in game 1, inopportune penalties and an ineffective penalty kill made the difference in the Leafs game 2 loss.
Toronto took 7 minor penalties to Tampa's 4, with the Lightning converting 3 of those opportunities to goals.
2 of those 3 powerplay goals came off penalties Simmonds took, both drawn on plays after the whistle had blown a stoppage.
While not the only player penalized for Toronto, Simmonds has shown himself to be accountable to his teammates and the fans, taking ownership for his mistakes and their impact on his team and the outcome of the game.
Wayne Simmonds: {We took too many penalties. I was the culprit of that. I took two, they scored two and we lost by two.» David Alter (@dalter) May 5, 2022
Though not putting up the points like he did during the height of his career in Philidephia, Simmonds has shown himself to be a leader on the Toronto team with big asperations that needs depth players who are capable of acknowledging their mistakes and improving upon them.
Simmonds: «I'm a man and can admit when I'm wrong. I was wrong twice tonight. And we paid for it»— Mike Stephens (@mikeystephens81) May 5, 2022
