Chris Simon's Family Cite CTE As Reason For Untimely Death
Chris Simon's family have released a statement regarding his death today. In it, they specifically mention how the former NHL player was suffering from CTE, calling it the reason why he passed away.
Former NHL Enforcer's Family Make Statement About CTE
When news broke that former NHL enforcer Chris Simon passed away at the age of 52 yesterday, many throughout the hockey world were saddened. No one was affected more by his passing than his family though. Following his death, they sought to create greater awareness for CTE as they believe Simon was suffering from the condition. Player agent and vocal critic of the NHL Allan Walsh broke the news.
Breaking: Former NHL winger Chris Simon's family confirmed he died by suicide in a statement released Tuesday night.
"The family strongly believes and witnessed firsthand, that Chris struggled immensely from CTE which unfortunately resulted in his death," the statement said.
Walsh was among the first NHL sources to report Simon's death. Like Simon's family, Walsh also cited CTE and the need for the NHL to take more proactive measures to prevent players from suffering after their careers end. He continues to be a staunch critic of the league's handling of head injuries.
Gary said in 2012 «we need more studies on #CTE». We have them now and he ignores them still saying «we wait for what the medical experts tell us». #LeagueOfDenial
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Continues To Affect Professional Athletes
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE for short, is a neurodegenerative disease that most often affects professional athletes who have suffered multiple concussions. While the disease is most often associated with American football, many athletes in other sports including hockey are dealing with the affects of the disease post-retirement. There is still more research to be done in this area, but one recent study found that CTE was discovered in 40% of athletes that died before the age of 30. Walsh is not the only one calling out the NHL for turning a blind eye to the condition. Medical doctors have continued to make statements calling for the league to make changes.
It's time NHL players fight back against the NHL on #CTE causation.
It's the players putting their futures at risk. Its their wives & children who will suffer if they get CTE.
NHL play causes #CTE. There is no room left for doubt.
Whether or not those changes come remains a mystery. Gary Bettman seems to be content in ignoring the issue while countless former players continue to suffer and die young.
