The Detroit Red Wings have had quite an interesting season. It has been full of ups and downs, but the team looks like they could be on pace for their first playoff appearance since 2016. As such, the team could be players at the trade deadline and one recent move indicates something major could happen.

Red Wings Terminate Career AHL Player's Contract

The team terminated the contract of 27-year-old forward Nolan Stevens today. Stevens has spent his entire career in the AHL to this point and he was unlikely to ever be an impact player with the Red Wings. However, terminating his contract does give the team one more contract slot to work with as they approach the trade deadline. NHL teams cannot have more than 50 players signed to contracts at the same time.

Red Wings To Make Announcement Regarding Contract Termination

Tyler Kuehl from Daily Faceoff is reporting that the team will elaborate on their decision to terminate Steven's contract tomorrow. It is quite possible that the player simply wanted out of his contract as there no longer appears to be a path to the NHL for him. We will just have to wait and see what the team says tomorrow.

Stevens was originally drafted in the 5th round by the St. Louis blues back in 2016. He has since played in 268 career AHL games with six different clubs. He has 48 goals and 130 points in that span. This season, the 27-year-old had 3 goals and 11 points in 31 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit's AHL affiliate. He signed a one-year, two-way deal with Detroit on July 3rd this year.
