When Sean Avery was blessed with his first-ever NHL paycheque, he didn't buy a car or a house like many players do but instead purchased something illegal.

A member of the media recently reached out to Sean Avery to advise that they were writing an article about what every NHL player did with their first every paycheque, and Avery provided his response by saying he purchased something illegal.

Sean Avery was brutally honest in his response, which was definitely not family-friendly, not that he would care anyway judging by how he played his NHL games. The local authorities are likely not too pleased with his response either.

Sean Avery is now a retired 44-year-old and began his NHL career with the Detroit Red Wings back during the 2001-02 season. He played in 580 career NHL games and managed to score 90 goals and 247 points, all while being a very annoying pest on the ice for the other players and even the goalies, especially Martin Brodeur.

Sean Avery will be best known for being the culprit as to why the NHL had to adopt a new rule, which they called "The Avery Rule". In a 2008 playoff game against legendary goalie Martin Brodeur, Sean Avery turned his whole body to directly face the Devils net-minder and moved his arms and stick around right in the goalie's face so that he wouldn't be able to see where the puck was going. That move actually worked and the New York Rangers scored a goal.

The NHL quickly adopted a new rule banning players from acting that way in front of goalies, and it was implemented the very next day. Anyone caught doing what Sean Avery did would get a two-minute minor penalty.
