Heading into the 2024-25 season Russian prospect Ivan Ryabkin was projected to be one of the top picks in the upcoming draft and could even challenge for a top-five selection. However, this season has not been the greatest for Ryabkin which has resulted in him falling down draft boards.
Scoring only one goal and 12 points through 25 games this year, two in the KHL, eight in the VHL (Russian AHL), and 15 in the MHL (Russian junior league), Ryabkin has been quite disappointing. Last year, in 44 games in the MHL, Ryabkin scored 58 points, production similar to Matvei Michkov and Ivan Demidov.
Today, it was reported that Ryabkin will be leaving his homeland and heading to North America to join the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the USHL which will hopefully boost his draft stock and further his development.
This should be a fantastic fit for Ryabkin as Muskegon has a history of developing top talents. Just last year alone, they produced two first-round picks in the 2024 NHL draft, Sacha Boisvert and Matvei Gridin.
Ryabkin is currently projected to be a mid-first-round pick but does have considerable upside as he was ranked in the top five in many draft rankings at the start of the season. He should emerge as one of the most prolific players in the USHL, cement himself back in top-ten conversations, and prove to be one of the better talents in the class.
