Fowler, who played for Boston College in the NCAA, was starting tonight against the Uconn Huskies when things went from bad to worse. BC was already trailing 2-1 early in the second period when Huskies forward Tristan Fraser scored, finishing off a 2-on-1. Immediately after the goal went in, chaos ensued.
Fowler appeared to take exception to the fact that Fraser crashed hard to the net on the play, ultimately colliding with the netminder. However, the contact was after the puck had already crossed the line so this was a good goal.
Immediately after the play, Fowler came out of his net to confront the player and chose violence. He gave Fraser a solid punch with his blocker which was the spark that blew the lid off this game. For those who don't know, blockers are actually quite hard and heavy so it does not feel good to get punched by one. As a result of the madness, Fowler was ejected from the game.
The Canadiens prospect is now facing a likely suspension. Keep in mind that the threshold for a suspension in the NCAA is a lot lower than it is in the NHL so Fowler could get quite a hefty one for this infraction.
Coming into tonight, Fowler had made 8 starts for Boston College, earning a 7-1-0 record while putting up a 1.26 goals-against-average and a .950 save percentage. Those numbers will take a hit tonight and he is in line for the loss assuming BC does not tie the game. Still, though, the Canadiens are looking very smart to grab him in the 3rd round right now.
Only time will tell if Fowler can translate his success to the NHL level, but he seems like as good of a bet as anyone. Be sure to keep an eye on him over the next few years as he works his way through the Habs system.
