Jeremy Swayman at 25 years of age has become one of the NHL's best goaltenders, and after the Boston Bruins traded away Linus Ullmark this summer, it was expected that he'd be paid like that to be the team's starter moving forward. That isn't going to be the case after all, as their Head Coach has revealed that Joonas Korpisalo will be the starter on opening night due to the ongoing contract dispute with Swayman.
That's a brutal blow for the Bruins, who have been accused of lowballing Swayman at points this season, and while they've disputed those accusations, they still are yet to come to terms on a new deal with Swayman. Now, President Cam Neely has come out and spoken about the situation, revealing that the goaltender was offered a $64 million deal, which would likely be an $8 million AAV deal over the length of eight seasons.
Ultimately though, with Korpisalo expected to start on opening night, it's clear that this wasn't enough for Swayman, who wants to be paid like one of the top-five goaltenders in the NHL. Sure, this could be Neely following on from what Don Sweeney did with him trying to protect the organization, but if this was indeed their offer, it's safe to say it's a fair one for what we've seen from Swayman thus far.
We are yet to see any contract resolution on the horizon, which means the two sides may still yet be far apart, and given their lofty goals in 2024/25, it's safe to say they will want this done very soon.
