The black and red "goathead" jersey, with its distinctive design, has carved out a special place in the hearts of fans and players for the Buffalo Sabres. Many, including one of their top players, Tage Thompson, have wished for it to become the team's main uniform. In their 54-year history, a whole bunch of jerseys have been worn by the Sabres, some memorable and others not so much.
The goathead jersey was first launched in 1996, which was the middle of a fruitful period for the Sabres, which included three Eastern Conference Finals appearances and a trip to the 1999 Stanley Cup Final. Despite being associated with these accomplishments, the jersey was retired after the 2005-06 season, replaced by designs that failed to capture the same magic and which ultimately coincided with the team's struggles.
In 2021, the NHL revived the "goathead" design as part of its Reverse Retro collection, but with different colors. The next year, the Sabres revived the original black and red version for their third jersey, and it was a huge hit. The players enjoyed how it looked, and more importantly, they did really well in it too, posting up an 18-7-2 record in the jersey.
Announcing the full-time uniform of the "goathead" jersey might finally be the spark the Sabres need to actually end their 13-year playoff drought. The nostalgia value of the goathead itself, with its popularity and success when the team donned it, does plenty for a compelling case to make for its permanent return.
