The Buffalo Sabres have been looking for a star since the departure of Jack Eichel, and in the past two seasons, center Tage Thompson has seemingly stepped into that role. With height, skill, and an incredible shot on his side, Thompson is emerging as one of the NHL's next great young talents, and on Saturday, he set an impressive NHL record.
According to the NHL's Public Relations social media, Thompson's slapshot, recorded at 104.69 miles per hour was the hardest shot recorded by NHL EDGE, with that technology dating back to 2021-22. The goal was just the latest in the impressive career of Thompson, who has scored 38, 47, and 29 over his past three seasons, and with seven in nine games in 2024/25, the young star is making his mark on the league early.
While the NHL EDGE recording only goes back to 2021-22, one only has to look back to Thursday to see the latest record set, as Michael Kesselring of the Utah Hockey Club did so just three days ago with an impressive shot at 103.77 MPH.
The impressive goal from Thompson was one of two on the day as the Sabres came away victorious over the Detroit Red Wings 5-3, leading them back to 4-4-1 on the season after an up-and-down start. With a young group around Thompson, the Sabres are looking to take a massive step forward this season, and if Tage can continue hitting his slap shots like this and beating goaltenders, it's safe to say that it's only a matter of time until they find themselves back in the Stanley Cup Playoffs once more.
