The Hurricanes have been in a tough spot in goal for the past couple of seasons.
The main reason for this has been Freddie Andersen's inability to stay healthy.
Last year, team doctors discovered that he has a rare blood disorder which kept him out for much of the season.
Last month, the team announced that the veteran netminder would be out for eight to twelve weeks after undergoing knee surgery.
Since then, the team has been on the lookout for help in goal. They signed Dustin Tokarski to an NHL contract earlier this month, but that is a temporary solution.
Now the team is active on the trade market according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun.
Specifically, the team is looking at Utah's Karel Vejmelka, Ottawa's Anton Forsberg, and Calgary's Dan Vladar, all netminders who are proven backups or "1b's."
The insider also revealed that the team was interested in former Sharks netminder MacKenzie Blackwood before he was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche.
Apparently, the team did not want to pay the price Colorado did to secure the goalie.
As such, it will be interesting to see what direction the team takes in the coming months.
Will they try to force a move to get help now, or will they roll with Kochetkov and Tokarski until the trade deadline?
Can the team rely on Andersen anymore, even when he returns?
All of these questions and more should be answered in the coming months, so stay tuned.
