This off-season was filled with plenty of speculation about RFA's and potential offer sheets, and in the end, it was the St. Louis Blues that went through with a deal, landing Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. However, they weren't the first RFA's on their radar, as it has now been revealed that the team came close to trading for Martin Necas of the Carolina Hurricanes, according to Elliotte Friedman.
This came long before Necas ultimately inked a two-year deal to remain with the Hurricanes, as they look to chase a long awaited Stanley Cup with their very deep squad.
Friedman never delved deep into what a potential return for Necas would have looked like, but given his age and production (24 goals and 53 points in 77 games played a year ago), it would have been an incredible pickup for the Blues. Ultimately though, it made too much sense for Carolina to retain him, as he has built fantastic chemistry with their current roster, and now, he returns to a talented squad as he looks to continue improving his value for his free agency in two summers time.
