The dominoes of the NHL trade deadline are beginning to fall, as the Boston Bruins have traded top target Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers, via the New Jersey Devils.

It was announced today by top insider Elliotte Friedman that the Edmonton Oilers have made a big swing with the Boston Bruins, acquiring gritty middle-six forward Trent Frederic.
Frederic's $2.3 million salary is not too high, but it appears that the New Jersey Devils will be a third party in the deal, retaining 50% of his salary in exchange for 6-foot-5 center prospect Shane LaChance from Boston University.
The Devils released this statement about LaChance after facilitating the deal:
LaChance, 21, is in his second season with Boston University (Hockey East) at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) level. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward has recorded 25 points (10g-15a) in 32 games this season. His goals, assists, and points totals all rank in the top five for Boston skaters in 2024-25, while his five game-winning goals rank second (tied) on the team.
Per Frank Seravalli, the Edmonton Oilers will also be acquiring Max Jones from the Boston Bruins. The 6-foot-3, 216 pound power forward will be a nice addition to their roster.
The Oilers will equally add 6-foot-4 winger Petr Hauser from the New Jersey Devils, who is an unsigned prospect.
In exchange for Frederic, the Bruins will acquire a second round pick, a fourth round pick, and prospect Max Wanner from the Edmonton Oilers.
Wanner will be assigned to the AHL, per Bruins GM Don Sweeney:
Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, March 4, that the team has acquired defenseman Max Wanner, a 2025 second-round draft pick (from St. Louis) and a 2026 fourth-round draft pick from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forwards Trent Frederic and Max Jones. Boston will retain 50 percent of Frederic's salary for the 2024-25 season. Wanner will report to the Providence Bruins.
After coming within one game of the Stanley Cup last season, it is clear the Oilers are motivated. Adding this type of physical depth will make them a scary team to play against beyond the top-six featuring Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
