Cam Atkinson is one of the most consistent players the NHL has seen over the past decade, but now the talented forward has been waived by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have one of the deepest and most talented core groups in the NHL, and with all of their veterans rolling once again in 2024/25, they appear to be a genuine Stanley Cup threat in the Eastern Conference.
Surprisingly though, the team decided to move a solid depth veteran on Tuesday, as they officially placed veteran Cam Atkinson on waivers after he played in 36 games with the team this season.
In those 36 games, Atkinson tallied 3 goals and 8 points, so while he hasn't produced like he did during his All-Star years of 2017 and 2019, he is certainly a fantastic depth piece that brings experience and leadership to a team that's ready to go deep in the post-season once more.
Unsurprisingly however is the reason behind the move, as it saves Tampa Bay a little money on their salary cap this season, and with recent reports that they are targeting Buffalo's Alex Tuch ahead of the trade deadline, this is yet another signal that they'll be buyers in a big way.
As for Atkinson, he could be a solid claim for rival teams as he posted 28 points a year ago and could be a solid bottom-six forward for many teams around the league, and at a relatively cheap price, he could be a solid fix for depth around the NHL.
Alongside Atkinson was former top pick Logan Brown, meaning the Lightning are gearing up for some type of big move, and with so many of their stars posting career years, it would not be a surprise at all to see them in on a major blockbuster in the coming days.
