There's been plenty of surprises early in the 2024/25, with teams like the Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning and Calgary Flames all off to undefeated starts, but it's the the Colorado Avalanche that may be the most disappointing, with a 1-4-0 record through five games. There are many reasons behind Colorado's struggles, but it's hard to ignore the goaltending issues, with Alexandar Georgiev posting a 4.99 GAA and an .811 save percentage through four starts.
Unsurprisingly, the team is looking to improve their goaltending stocks, even after landing Kaapo Kahkonen on waivers from the Winnipeg Jets, and now they may have two big-time targets in mind. According to Eklund of Hockey Buzz, the team has been linked to both John Gibson of the Anaheim Ducks and Alex Lyon of the Detroit Red Wings, both of whom appear to not have the ideal role with their current teams.
Both would be significant upgrades to Georgiev, who has been mostly solid for Colorado since being acquired from New York, and with other names like Dan Vladar, Petr Mrazek, and Logan Thompson all potentially being available, this is a situation to monitor. Colorado defeated the Ducks for their first win of the year on Friday, but with a very poor start, they've got plenty to turn around, if they can fix their goaltending and get back the four forwards they are missing, this could still be a contending team in 2024/25.
