The Edmonton Oilers are in a tough spot, trailing 0-3 in the Stanley Cup Final after a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in game three. Despite the efforts of Stuart Skinner, it's clear the team needs a major boost.

Skinner has shown his capability during these playoffs, proving he can perform on the big stage. However, the Oilers' performance has been subpar, marred by mistakes and a power play that has gone 0-for-10.

Edmonton Oilers need key players to step up

A significant factor in their struggles is being outplayed in the net. Sergei Bobrovsky of the Florida Panthers has been phenomenal, allowing just four goals with a .953 save percentage, making a strong case for the Conn Smythe Trophy. In contrast, Skinner has allowed nine goals with a .868 save percentage. While Skinner isn't solely to blame, he hasn't made those crucial saves that can turn the tide of a game.
This situation is reminiscent of the Oilers' second-round series against the Vancouver Canucks. Coach Kris Knoblauch made a bold move by starting Calvin Pickard in game four, which paid off with Pickard's solid performance leading to a crucial win. Although Pickard lost game five, he still played impressively.
Given the dire circumstances, it might be time to give Pickard another start. The Oilers have nothing to lose and everything to gain. This isn't about losing faith in Skinner but rather about taking a calculated risk. Skinner is a team player and would likely support whatever decision is best for the team.
Pickard isn't the long-term solution, but desperate times call for unconventional strategies. If starting Pickard can spark a turnaround, it's worth the gamble. The Oilers need a win in game four to keep their hopes alive, and giving Pickard his first start in the Stanley Cup Final might just be the spark they need.
