Tuesday was a massive day for the Edmonton Oilers, as superstar forward Leon Draisaitl locked in for a further eight years, becoming the highest paid player in the NHL, with the deal earning him $14 million per season over that time. While there was plenty of positivity among the Oilers fans, comments from the star forward himself could raise question marks over the future of Connor McDavid, who is due an extension in the summer of 2025.
With two years left on his current deal, McDavid will be paid $12.5 million AAV over that time, but given his success over the past five years, there's no doubting that he will far surpass the $14 million deal signed by Draisaitl, but now the question is, how much will he get paid?
According to James Mirtle of The Athletic, 15% of the salary cap may not be enough to satisfy McDavid, who continues to shatter records, putting himself on pace to become one of the greatest players in NHL history.
Plenty can happen between now and July of 2025 when McDavid is officially up for an extension, and while there's optimism that he will remain with Edmonton, the subtle comments from Draisaitl suggest it may not be as much of a done deal as once thought.
