News broke that would squash all those recent rumors: The Edmonton Oilers have officially invited defenceman Travis Dermott into their training camp on a professional tryout (PTO). Left-handed shot Dermott was picked 34th overall in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, the same year they took Mitch Marner. He spent seven seasons with the Leafs organization before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a 2022 third-round pick.
This past season, he signed with the Arizona Coyotes, where he had gotten into 50 games, adding seven points while averaging over 17 minutes of ice time per game.
Now, Travis Dermott is an unrestricted free agent who will join the Oilers on a try-out basis with the hopes of landing a roster spot. He does have a slight advantage in that he played under head coach Kris Knoblauch in junior with the Erie Otters. Another added bonus is he played with Connor McDavid and Connor Brown, which helps along the process of getting acclimated.
Whether he gets a contract in Edmonton remains to be seen, but his connections and experience could work in his favor.
