This past week has been chaotic in the NHL, and after the regular season has finally begun for most teams, all of the moves in the off-season are now ready to play out on the ice. One situation that needs to be resolved is the one involving Raphael Lavoie, who has been placed on waivers three times in the past week, including twice by the Edmonton Oilers, who just reclaimed him yesterday.
However, when they reclaimed him, another team placed in a claim, meaning that he would not be automatically reassigned to the AHL, forcing the team to risk waivers again today to get him to the Bakersfield Condors.
Beyond that, the other big name placed on waivers is veteran goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen of the Winnipeg Jets, who had just signed a one-year deal with the team this off-season, but was ultimately beat out for the backup role by Eric Comrie, who will now seemingly serve as the primary backup behind Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck.
At 28-years of age, the former fourth-round draft pick has 139 NHL games under his belt heading into this season, and while he's got experience and plenty of gas left in the tank, it appears there's no room for him in Winnipeg. If he does clear, he will serve as great depth for the organization in the AHL, but with many teams around the league needing depth, look for a potential move here.
Ultimately, both Canadian teams are at risk of losing their players placed on waivers today, but with rosters being finalized for the regular season ahead, they were both necessary moves, so now we wait and see how this plays out.
