The announcement came this afternoon, between games five and six of the Rangers' series against the Carolina Hurricanes. The award is given out on an annual basis to a player that shows exceptional leadership qualities on and off the ice, as well as contributes to the local community.
While other NHL awards are voted on either by media members, general managers, or the players themselves, this one is handed out a bit differently. In fact, the winner is chosen not by a committee, or a voting group, but unilaterally, by one man. None other than Mark Messier himself.
As a result, many fans do not think much of this particular trophy. In fact, many have made fun of the fact that Trouba win the award this year, by showcasing a play just from a few days ago that shows why he shouldn't be considered for awards like this. On the play, Trouba deliberately tries to elbow Carolina Hurricanes forward Marty Necas in the head.
One fan joked that Trouba only leads with his elbow. Their comment was the most well received and favorited comment on the original post declaring Trouba the winner.
As such, this trophy is seen as somewhat of a farce. That being said, it doesn't really matter. All Rangers fans care about right now is advancing to the Eastern Conference finals, and hopefully, the Stanley Cup finals after that.
