With the second half of the 2024/25 season set to begin after the Four Nations Face Off, the New York Rangers find themselves three points out of the Wild Card race in the Eastern Conference, a spot no one expected them to be in.
While they are clearly still a team with talent, they've made some big changes already, and according to speculation, there still could be some big changes left to be made ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
Now, top NHL Insider Larry Brooks has suggested a shocking trade that would truly shake up the landscape in New York, as it would involve moving former No. 1 overall pick Alexis Lafreniere.
In the proposed deal, the Rangers would send Lafreniere to Anaheim, a team they know well after trade captain Jacob Trouba there earlier this season, and in exchange, they would land the immensely talented Trevor Zegras.
On paper, this would be a deal that could benefit both parties, as it would get Zegras in New York, a place he has long been linked too, and it would allow Lafreniere to potentially get the top-six role that he's been seeking since he arrived in the NHL.
Ultimately though, it's a deal that's very unlikely to happen, as Lafreniere just locked himself into New York on a long-term deal, showing that the team clearly believed in him as a long-term piece, but if they begin to grow unsatisfied with his production, anything is on the table, and after landing J.T. Miller, don't be shocked at any move the Rangers would make.
