Kasperi Kapanen opens up about personal struggles with addiction
First and foremost, it takes courage to open up about personal struggles, for Kasperi Kapanen, it could mean finally putting his past to bed and moving forward with his new outlook on life.
Kapanen, 27, was arrested last off-season after being caught drinking and driving and was later found guilty. Now just one year later, he reflects on what is undoubtedly the hardest point in his life.
"I think I told my mother and of course, my girlfriend knew about it. I only told the others when the matter came out in September. It was such a big shame for me."
Kapanen also talked about how his father, former NHL'er Sami Kapanen, and how he was afraid to tell him.
"I didn't even dare to tell my father, because I knew he would be really disappointed
Later in the interview, he opened up about why he turned to alcohol.
"At some point, there was more drinking that I didn't do it to celebrate, but because there was so much pressure, annoyance or anxiety during the season,"
Looking ahead to the 2024-25 NHL season, Kapanen has returned to the Blues after signing a one-year, $1 million deal. Where he looks to get his career back on track and be an everyday NHL player for the next number of years.
