Stanley Cup champion veteran could hit the trade market per insider Darren Dreger
According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the St. Louis Blues are shopping veteran center Brayden Schenn.
The St. Louis Blues did not exactly have huge expectations from around the league this season, but many within the organization expected the club to be much more competitive than they have been.
Currently, the team is in 6th place in the Central Division and they are not particularly close to a playoff position.
They have a 24-25-5 record along with a -17 goal differential, which is often the best indicator of future success.
As a result, the team appears to be sellers as next month's trade deadline approaches.
NHL insider Darren Dreger reported on Insider trading today that St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong is even considering moving his captain.
"Some believe that there is potential of Brayden Schenn being traded by the St. Louis Blues. He is their captain and he does have a full no-trade clause so it is a complicated process but we also know Doug Armstrong very well. How aggressive he can be and the Blues are underachieving right now. So yes, the top contenders looking for a center on the market are interested and that would include the Toronto Maple Leafs. The return would have to be mammoth."
Schenn has played in nearly 1000 career regular-season NHL games and has 271 goals and 665 points.
The 33-year-old has served as captain of the Blues the last two seasons after wearing an "A" for the team three years before that.
That being said, he is signed until he is 36 and has shown signs of age-related decline already. Last season he had just 46 points.
While he should easily surpass that number this season, his 6.5 million dollar cap hit will still be a hurdle for many teams if Armstrong is expecting a 'mammoth' return for him.
Still, he could be a perfect fit for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who need help down the middle.
After all, center depth is often a major key for teams in the playoffs, so be sure to keep an eye on Schenn and the Blues as the trade deadline approaches.
